Tteokbokki is one of the most popular Korean dishes of all time. Chewy rice cakes are cooked to perfection in a spicy, sweet, delicious sauce to create the ultimate comfort food. When you add ramen noodles to this classic dish, you get rabokki! This dish is one that I hold near and dear to my heart and I’ve probably had it more than 500 times in my lifetime. From street vendors, to local hole-in-the-wall shops, to my mom’s homemade tteokbokki, every recipe is different. So today, here is my personal recipe for rabokki!

tteokbokki recipe

Just to warn you, this recipe is SPICY. The spice level depends heavily on the type of gochugaru (Korean red pepper flakes) you use. If you want to tone down the spice, use a mild gochugaru and reduce the amount you add to the dish. Another note for this recipe is that I used a Korean soup base (dashima yuksu) instead of water for my tteokbokki because it adds more depth to the sauce. If you are short on time, or don’t have access to the necessary ingredients, you can substitute with chicken broth or water. You can find the recipe for the Korean broth base here.

This is just a basic recipe, but you can add in sausages, bacon, seaweed, dumplings, or whatever you want to your tteokboki! I usually like to have some blood sausage (sundae) on the side to dip in the spicy sauce. For the ramen, an important note is to NOT overcook them. They will get mushy and bloated if you cook them for too long. Give this rabokki recipe a try and let me know what you think in the comments down below!
